Robert Pearlman | First look at Dragon's 1:72 Apollo 15 "J-Missions" Command and Service Module model, which was announced today. I've suggested to Dragon that they consider detailing the SIM bay, as that was what truly set the J-mission command modules apart from earlier flights. |
kosmo | They better get the S-band high gain antenna in the correct quadrant also. |
edorr | And of course, that's the Apollo 17 CSM, not Apollo 15... |
onesmallstep | ..and a nice pair of spacewalking CMP/LMP figures to recreate those deep-space EVAs would be great, too! |
randyc | Frankly, without a detailed SIM bay, it's NOT a J series model. Period. |
arjuna | Agree with Randy. Without the SIM bay, there's no very compelling reason to buy it. Sorry. I've been enthusiastic about Dragon's line but this one is a miss. |
dog320 | Yep, concur with most of the above, its a real dog's breakfast. As the CM hatch can't open I think a CMP going EVA would look a bit wierd. A separate subsatellite for Apollo 15 would be nice too. |

Especially if you do own the previous seven Apollo CSM models (Apollo 7, 8, 9, 10, lunar approach, lunar landing and Apollo-Soyuz). Dragon will have to think of something that adds value to this model so that it's not "another CSM model". Same reasoning applies to other models like the Delta 2 rocket. |
cycleroadie | Hit the coast today, should be shipping to you soon! |
the clocks running | I just ordered mine yesterday from The Flying Mule. They have these models in-stock now. |
randyc | I looked at the photos on The Flying Mule website and there's no SIM bay. How can this model be called Apollo 15 if it doesn't have a SIM bay, so why would anyone want it? |
GoesTo11 | I agree, and also agree with Chris' statement about "adding value." I have most of the models in this series, and I love them, but I can't quite talk myself into this one.
|
cycleroadie | Agreed on the no added value in this one. I think Dragon has pushed the collectors to the limit on these, and a number of the other models too. |
garyd2831 | I have to say I really like the effort that Dragon has made in supplying nice models for collectors. Personally I don't think they need to produce a model for each mission because the average collector wouldn't notice the difference. I'm happy with the Saturn V 1/72 scale that was produced and will be adding the Apollo 10 top portion just so I can see a stowed LM. Also ordered the ASTP and MR-7 1/72 scale and that will fuel all my interest. Not to mention I don't have the room for it all. What I would like to see is a nice 1/72 scale mode of Skylab and it doesn't have to be the know flight version missing on of its solar array sections either. It can be in its original configuration as far I care. Would also like to 1/72 scales for some of the manned flight launch vehicles like the Titans and Saturn 1Bs and maybe a shuttle stack. Just some of my thoughts. |
the clocks running | I completely agree with the criticism in regards to this CM. However, I feel the need to have all of these models and purchased it to complete the collection. If Dragon decides to offer this model as a kit the Xacto hobby knife and Iwata airbrush will come out to play. I am waiting for the 1/72 scale Saturn V kit to "super detail" it. |
GoesTo11 | I have the Mercury/Redstone model on the way. If Dragon doesn't give us a 1:72 Mercury/Atlas and Gemini/Titan II, I will be...disappointed. |
cspg | The Flying Mule mentioned that they were expecting such models to be produced. But I don't know if that expectation was based on real information. Logic would be that the Atlas/Titan boosters will be produced. (They better!) |
Cunumdrum61 | Dragon have scribed in the SIM bay and added only about 50% of the hand handholds around the panels. And now have also added another screw location to mount the CSM. So now we have one hole that must be plugged with a plastic piece. They really didn't do their homework on this one and I will wait and hope they do it as a kit then I will buy and build it correctly. It is a bit of a miss I think. |
the clocks running | I received my model today from Flying Mule and it is exactly as described above. Dragon does a very good job with these models and give us about 80% (not including the 1/72 Saturn V which is way less than 80%). I would be willing to pay a little more for the other 20% though. |
